We love Amanda Jennings at Compelling Reads, every so often you find an author whose books draw you in completely and Amanda does this every time.
In her wake starts at the funeral of Bella’s mother, as matriarch of the family Bella and her dad have spent their lives placating her and her ways. Deeply possessive of Bella to the extant of more or less keeping her locked away at home for most of her life, meaning Bella doesn’t make friends easily and her married the first man who showed an interest in her (her older college lecturer).
In the wake of her mother’s death Bella’s life begins to unravel and she finds that who she is, is completely called into question.
I can’t write too much more about the plot without major spoilers and this is one book which you have to read for yourself. It’s impossible not to lose yourself in the pages and find a day gone by because you’ll be desperate to get to the end.
It’s a heartfelt look at family bonds, identity and I felt a mother’s love. The main plot whilst challenging is dealt with sensitively and I felt for Henry and his wife and the incredible depths she went to, for her child.
Bella’s voice throughout the novel was compelling, you can’t help but find yourself involved in her life and story and invested in getting to the truth.
The plot is one big rollercoaster of intrigue and there’s some superb twists! Amanda has a special kind of magic in her writing and this book certainly cast a spell on me. This is honestly the best book I have read so far this year! Wow, just Wow!
